Bruce Abele has found another link in the search for the U.S.S. Grunion. His father died aboard the submarine when Abele and his brothers were children, and for years, the ship remained lost somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.
In 2006, the Abele brothers, who grew up in Newton, located the ship off the island of Kiska, Alaska. But it wasnt until last week that the navy officially recognized the wreckage as the World War II submarine, the U.S.S. Grunion.
And just recently, a family member of the crew located the bell of the U.S.S. Grunion. Because the bells are too heavy, they are often removed before battle. After the U.S.S. Grunion disappeared, the bell was found in a Dumpster at the Pearl Harbor Navy base around the time of the Korean War. A man by the name of Rev. Noonan brought the bell to Greenville, Miss., where unbeknownst to him, a descendent of a crewmember was living.
The bell was brought up to Abeles house in Newton and will be transported to Cleveland, Ohio, for a memorial service this weekend, where 250 people will gather to remember the lost crew.
