Um Bongo is a mixed tropical fruit juice drink in the United Kingdom, manufactured by Gerber Foods Soft Drinks Limited under the name Libby's.

It is particularly famous for its long running (sung) slogan of "They Drink It In The Congo", used with the accompanying animated television advert since the 1980s.

For a short period of time in the 1990s, Um Bongo gained a sister drink called Um Ognob but this has since been withdrawn.

Song Lyrics:

Way down deep in the middle of the Congo, a hippo took an apricot, a guava and a mango. He stuck it with the others, and he danced a dainty tango.

The rhino said, "I know, we'll call it Um Bongo", Um Bongo, Um Bongo, They drink it in the Congo.

The python picked the passion fruit, the marmoset the mandarin. The parrot painted packets, that the whole caboodle landed in.

So when it comes to sun and fun and goodness in the jungle, They all prefer the sunny funny one they call Um Bongo!

  • Unbelievable - how sad is it that it was my party piece back in the mid '80's that I had memorised the words to this advert and used to entertain my classmates with a rendition of it at break time (!) ...sad...sad...sad...!?

  • um bongo tastes crap

  • Um Bongo, Um Bongo, niggers drink it in the Congo was what they were really thinking.

  • @AcidGuardianPT ..it doesn't mean anything...it's a made-up phrase, which is pretending to sound African. ; )

  • So what does Um Bongo mean? I thought it was portuguese but turns out the brand is english lol

  • @utrapzab Oh aye. tis all change these days. Loved the KIA-ORA advert too

  • @BuddyFantastic THINK WHAT THEYD DO TO KIA ORA!!!! best advert of my childhood but that would have been so banned thesedays

  • Couldn't get away with doing this sort of advert now, with mock african accents. I think the chicken firm Sun Valley back in the 90's got into trouble when a "blacked up" chef said Very Goody Goody in a mock asian accent in one of their adverts
