Honda Insight LX 2010, driving at night

In the early hours of July 17, 2011 just after midnight, I decided to take a video of driving my Honda Insight LX 2010 model here in greater Buffalo, NY. I've had the car barely more than a year since May of 2010, and I've already put 27,000 miles on it.

I wanted to get a video of what the controls look like at night. For the first 6 minutes of the video I used the MPG chart. For the last half I used the electric/gas drive train feature that shows if electric energy is being used, generated, and also how much assistance the gasoline engine provides. Since the Insight IMA engine is not a "full hybrid" the electric engine is primarily just an assistance engine and cannot propel the car in true electric-only mode. Despite it being an early hybrid technology, at low speeds or during low acceleration, the gas injection can be shut off for very brief periods to enhance fuel economy... Regardless that the IMA is an early hybrid technology, you can see the IMA architecture works well to enhance fuel economy as I'm averaging 50 MPG and still averaging speeds in the 40-60 MPH range from highway to streets.

For those of you who have a harder time driving optimally, I find the Insight can easily attain between 40 and 45 MPG not using "Econ" mode and accelerating as fast as the car allows. So you still get incredible fuel economy even when not driving optimally, as shown here.
