http://www.ted.com In this passionate talk from TEDxSanMigueldeAllende that's already caused a sensation in Mexico, Emiliano Salinas, son of former president Carlos Salinas de Gortari, confronts the current climate of violence in Mexico -- or rather, how Mexican society responds to it. He plots the way for society to move from denial and fear to peaceful, community-based action, calling on ordinary citizens to stand up and seize hold of the future of their country. This is the first TEDTalk delivered in a language other than English.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate.

  • @elchafa The Salinas regime stole my family's land forcing all of us to start over from zero and almost fall apart...Emiliano Salina's father Carlos Salinas de Gortari has become the poster child for what's wrong with Mexico..heck, his mask is one of the more popular ones around Halloween, he still haunts us to this day literally...Good talk though very educated fellow.. he probably went to a good school paid for by our tax money. saludos.

  • I find it rather odd that so many are so negative.. HE started off saying what he was going to say will cause controversy---Has one up one most of you.. I know some did not even bother listening to what he said..so many people are so hypocritical ---OH WAIT was that sort of the message to get off your ass, stop denying-blaming and do something---NO NO fogrot you all want it done FOR you

  • He's a fucking idiot. How can Mexicans stand up for anything when the narco-government will kill anybody who tries to bring down their corrupted money-hungry regime? I wonder if he bought his way through college because his logic makes no sense.

  • A lot of the comments complain about his family background, but fail to address his key points

Mexicans have often identified themselves as victims

At the moment, they are often in denial of the problem

They are moving toward anger-based action

They have to move beyond that towards non-violent action

The key question is whether Ghandian protests can solve a situation powerfully economically motivated by US refusal to legalise drugs. I'm open to ideas on that. Let's focus on the solution.

  • I'm colombian am what this guy says ain't true, violence caused by drug will end when drug becomes legalized. Ask this violence it's the cause of usa stupid war on drugs. This us not a problem of people trying to deny violence, it's natural tio be afraid of violence this is a legal and economic interest problem caused by moralist politicians whom font know a fuck of reality and dont give a fuck

  • Oh my, him speaking about this is so inappropiate...

  • This was a good speech with a great cause and I can't see nothing but good intentions behind it.

The rest(him being a criminal, which to me sounds unlikely) is an other discussion.

  • Estuve tomando enserio la platica, hasta que dijo "llego masiosare el extraño enemigo"...

  • i don't know a thing about his politics but he's gorgeous omggg
