Transcription here: http://egyokeo.com/transcriptions This is Train Song off Jing Chi's first album. One of my favorite drum parts. I only play the first bit, because that's the part that contains so many great "Vinnie" ideas. The rest of the song is good, so go buy the album if you want to hear it :)

My philosophy on transcribing... It's good for at least 2 things:

1) It helps train your ear to be able to pick out every little note that someone plays. It can get challenging with the other instruments playing on top, but most of the time, if you repeat a section often enough, you'll be able to pick out every little grace note.

2) It expands your bag of tricks. I've found that figuring out every little nuance in a favorite drum part, learning to play it, getting it comfortable, it only serves to help me out later, while playing some other song. I may not try to "rip off" an exact lick, but when I'm in the moment, I find that I can play more stuff than I would have if I hadn't analyzed other people's tricks.

Anyway, hope you like this.

  • great playing and audio recording. Is that a custom configured drum kit or one of roland's or are you triggering some drum sample like Superior 2 or Addictive Drums?

  • thanks! it's stock Roland sounds, but I made the "kit" myself by choosing all the toms/snare/cymbals that most sounded like Vinnie's kit on this song.

  • thanks for getting back and providing that info. I have a TDW-20 w/VEXpressions. it's good to know that the module is capable of getting the sounds you got. How do you record your videos, the sound quality is excellent.

  • I plug iPod into the TD-20, mix out to headphones, but only drums through the digital out to PC, then any ol' WAV recorder works. Then I mix 1) the video with 2) the original song track from the ipod and 3) the drum track recorded on the PC.

  • Do you actually read and interpret all of it while you play, or is it just a reminder of when to play what, etc.?

  • I spend hours working out the sticking in each measure, then I use the transcription as just a reminder to play it in real time.
