Using Lee Filters ND Grads in the field ND filter effect

This video shows the effect of using Lee ND Soft Grad filters to help control skies that are brighter than the foreground.
The video uses the Nikon D3100's video mode to provide a live overview of the filter working.

thanks. what about the circular nd graduated filters? do they function in the same way?

@ashkibala1 Yes, similar except obviously you cant change the position of the graduation by moving the filter. You have to recompose the enitire shot, which isnt always possible.

thanks it's so cool. but if i'm going for shooting, how can i know which filter is the right one? i mean do i have to expose for the sky and then expose for the ground and find the difference between their exposures and then choose the right filter? in such case i have to carry maybe 5 different filters! is that what you do? thanks

@ashkibala1 Thats exactly how to do it yes. I only have 3 filters, a 0.3 (1 stop), 0.6 (2 stop) and 0.9 (3 stop). By stacking them together you can get enough coverage for almost every situation.

Wow that is cool. I was looking for an orange filter and holder for doing sunset silhouettes and came across your video. Thanks for sharing that video. That gave me more ideas I'd like to play around with for my Canon DSLR. I still need to look for a filter holder 1st before thinking about this.
