King of the Cowboys ROY ROGERS introduces Cole Porter's brand new western ballad, "DON'T FENCE ME IN" in the 1944 film, "HOLLYWOOD CANTEEN". He is accompanied by the Sons of the Pioneers. He also does a few tricks with Trigger.

The movie was a World War II star parade featuring real Hollywood Canteen founders Bette Davis and John Garfield as well as The Andrews Sisters, Ida Lupino, Joan Leslie, Dennis Morgan, Kitty Carlisle, and lots more!

  • My boyhood hero. I think he was from Ohio and spent part of his youth living on a houseboat with his parents. A great voice.

  • @vs800rider Yes, he was from Ohio. Actually, the house that he was born in stood where third base of the baseball stadium in Cincinatti is now!

  • @CowboyandtheSenorita have you ever been to duck run? thats where is boyhood home is. he lived in Scioto county too. because they honor him every year.

  • @angiecopus One year we would love to go. We have looked into going, but something always comes up to delay the trip. Can't wait to go one year, though!

  • Long live the King of the Cowboys! And to think Cole Porter wrote this song!

Roy and Gene were my first cowboy heroes starting whe nI was about twleve and I'm happy to say I've never recovered!

  • Trigger's first big movie was "The Adventures of Robin Hood" where he was Maid Marian's horse. Olivia de Havilland of course was Maid Marian and Errol Flynn was Robin Hood.

  • What memories! I was a cowgirl back then and my bike was my horse!

  • I <3 Roy Rogers!! :) And one of my absolute favorite hero fiddle players, Hugh Farr, is playing one of my favorite tunes of his I'm TRYING to learn, Cajon Stomp! :)

  • This was a pleasure to watch and listen to and yes it did make you feel happy, just loved it when Trigger said his hello :) and dancing and giving his master a kiss...now where have I seen that before? ;) xx

  • Doesn't this just put a smile on your face? Just plain makes me happy :) I would have love to have lived in that era. Thank you for posting!

  • and just think, he never took an acting lesson in his life!

  • He was a man of many talents--I saw him shoot trap as a guest--he was very elderly at the time, but with a borrowed gun and no practice he stood up and shot a terriffic score, right in with the very best that day. He was an excellent businessman, and I never heard a hint of a scandal or any impropriety EVER! He was a true hero to me up to this day. He had an excellent voice and was overlooked as a front line vocalist IMO. He was an avid motorcyclist as well.
