@LuigiMartin1 Incorrect, good old days of the moro piracy in the whole region that covers north of Philippines to west of Indonesia and Malaysia. The navy weak as it is, still doing a good job of preventing such thing to happen again. (at least in RP). MILF without the weak Army we have will be marching to all the cities in Mindanao and declare independence. What do you think is stopping them now from doing that?
China will start with Taiwan or Vietnam. Its easier to march than to swim

@LuigiMartin1 - arms wise USA and Russia can match PLA - Vietnam had an alliance with Russia but it did not deter China - 28 days into the war Deng Xiao Peng said there is no more defense left in Vietnam. China left after 28 days. That was easy wasn't it? I don't know what a cake walk is for you if this is not one.
Again its not a issue whether they are strong or not, its an issue of not being strong enough. I do agree however that we need to strengthen the afp.

"GOOD OLD DAYS"? you're referring to the '70's... a period of heightened state apprehension at the peak of communist infestation & its rebellious activities both in the urban & rural areas, & of martial Law days plagued by sufferings, death & injustice. Hmmmmn, good old days was that to you? seriously? As to the local piracy , hell, I am more worried of bigger possibility that all of Palawan & Western Philippine Sea including Manila Bay would one day become Chinese territory!

We all know that arms-wise, nothing can match the PLA, however, a strong military & an alliance w/ a strong country is a necessity, Vietnam's military has improved dramatically since then and it's relationship w/ the US as well, Taiwan has a strong military & an existing treaty w/ the USA while we, though, with the 1951 treaty, sad to say remains with a barely existing military! When China invaded vietnam, it wasn't a walk in the cake for them! :D
