Supposedly, there was an earlier subway tunnel in Brooklyn, built in the 1840s, and rediscovered in the 1980s. However, there is considerable debate over whether it can be truly called a "subway" tunnel, as opposed to just a regular "railway" tunnel.
If it's a "subway" tunnel, then it's the oldest in America. However, if it's just a regular old railway tunnel, it's not nearly as special.
