Tehran city may be more populous than New York City (8.8 million to 8.1 million) but NYC has a more populous metropolitan area than Tehran (22 million to 13 million)
I study urban demographics for a living so I know what im talking about

Tehran's population was 7mil around 1995. Now the greater Tehran population is about 16million.About 1000 people move to Tehran everyday so population increases 1mil every 3years. In 1900 Tehran's population was 250,000.Imagine the population of NYC, LA and Chicago living in a city 30% larger in size than Atlanta, that's Tehran.
Another interesting fact: From tehran's 16mil population at least 12mil have moved to america and opened up a TV station :))))
