The Negros Oriental Detention and Rehabilitation Center is a provincial jail managed under the Office of the Governor in the Province of Negros Oriental, Philippines. It is one of the two jails in Dumaguete City and resembles a ghetto community. Negotiations between the Province of Negros Oriental and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Department of Interior and Local Government of the Philippines are taking place for the transfer of the facility to BJMP. At present, the provincial jail has 208 inmates and many boarders -- families of inmates from towns and communities far from Dumaguete City. These boarders, including small children, live within the prison compound in tiny shacks without drinkable water supply and adequate sanitary facilities. The inmates are confined to their cells from 5 PM to 7AM and at mealtimes. During the day, the inmates are out of their cells performing jail duties such as housekeeping, cooking and serving food, collecting firewood, building and yard maintenance, etc. The majority of the inmates are detained for drug related offences and many are young adults.
The eco-KALAN presentation to the provincial jail kitchens and selected inmates is an eco-KALAN Project done in collaboration with the Chaplain Prison Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Dumaguete under Father Burton Villarmente. This is the second jail presentation the Project has undertaken and the second time the eco- Magic Box was introduced to a prison in combination with the large eco-KALAN-C. The Magic Box cooks without fire -- it cooks beans and tough meat with the heat that is retained in the pot and its contents after boiling for 10 minutes using an eco-KALAN-C. The Magic Box is a large carton box that is lined with thick cartons and a ½" Styrofoam insulating material with aluminum foil on one side. The air space between the pot and the walls of the box is filled with crumpled newspaper for added insulation. For big volume cooking such as in jails and schools, the combination of the eco-KALAN-C and the Magic Box maximizes fuel savings; maximizes the amount of food cooked within a given period; and minimizes cooking time. The eco-KALAN donors and sponsors of the April 8, 2011 Inmate Lunch are Kees & Rebecca Arrieta Vermeer of Sidney, British Columbia, Canada. The eco-KALAN Project plans to "eco-kalanize" all the jails in the Province of Negros Oriental and make it an example to all the jails throughout the Philippines.

  • It would also prove useful to provide locations in the Philippines where we can purchase these stoves. I am a Canadian married to a Filipino. I realize that employment opportunities are welcomed by the Filipino people. Why is not every village in the Philippines offering these stoves for sale? Why are Filipinos not being employed to distribute and sell these stoves? Our family lives near Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. There are plenty of Americans and Canadians married to Filipinos who will buy

  • @Chidanandaji Our production is small --not even enough for our province of Negros Oriental. But we are working on plans to scale up production with the help of Carbon Financing. Hopefully this will also bring down unit cost of production so the retail price becomes affordable. The retail price people in Dumaguete are willing to pay is about 50% of production cost. If you are interested in ordering, please send email to: info.ecokalan@telus.net . Thank you for inquiring.

  • Hi, I'm doing a study on NODRC inmates and their health seeking behaviors. Would it be alright if I paraphrase a part of your above description? With citation of course :)

  • @euphibia OK. Thanks for asking. ecokalan

  • This was an empowering video. Great work.

  • As soon as you publish the locations of retail outlets in the Philippines where these stoves may be purchased, then I will begin forwarding this information across twitter and facebook....throughout the Philippine communities across the West and East.
