A musical number from the famous 1930 science-fiction comedy "Just Imagine."

Comment:
I'd known of "Just Imagine" for years through stills and historical references. When I finally found a VHS copy I wasn't prepared for how lame it was. The future city sets are about all that's worthwhile. The story is slow and wanders all over. Exteriors other than the city miniature are terrible. Few of the jokes are funny.

This musical number is typical. Earlier the film established that in the future drinking alcohol had been replaced by taking intoxicating pills; yet here's a full-fledged Vienna-student drinking song (it even has a line in German!) Too bad...but still an interesting curio.

  • But they're drinking sarsaparilla! (Prohibition still in effect in 1930, you know)

  • true! What struck me as contradictory was that a big running gag in the film is that people in the future get drunk by taking pills (prohibition of liquor is still in effect in the future, too). Why would people in such a society care for drinking songs? I'd expect them to sit there banging pills on the table.

  • haha cool

  • Heh. Or maybe they were drinking sarsaparilla spiked by hooch? People got creative during Prohibition! (I wonder if the number of drinking songs in movies went up during Prohibition?)

  • oh thanks. Am not familiar with (am an old person) the current fad street lingos. But do know in a few years, if not sooner, what is considered clever and novel today will be thought of as ridiculous. Just as at one time to wear a baseball cap backwards you were considered an imbécile, while today is so fashionable among the street crowd. And so too with the lingo.

  • OK, when someone says something "is shit", that is what you rationalized, it is of inferior quality.

Sycorax, however, was complimenting the film, because when he said the film "is the shit", it is an overused urban-slang expression of enjoyment of an object or event.

This phrase most closely resembles someone being the "cock of the walk" or "the man" (i.e. he's the man/he's the shit).

  • They are aeroplane pilots getting reading for their big war mission in the morning. They will all take to the skies with hangovers? No wonder they missed all the targets.

Would not say the movie "was shit" however, as stated by the person (obviously a teenager) above.

  • i like it!

more 30s era sci fi please.

  • this movie is the shit.
