  • Any other cup mute you recommend in particular or just the Humes and Berg?

  • @jjcantu86

Yeah, I also use the Jo-Ral adjustable one. It's got felt inserts so you can change the quality of the tone it gets. Very light aluminum, nice tone, good intonation.... (gonna try to post a link, but YouTube usually doesn't like that. Here's it is:

    is . gd / oquwab

  • hmm, for that link to work, you've got to take out the spaces and put the Hypertext Transfer Protocol in front of it....

  • what mute is best for Jazz playing Bucket mute or Cup mute

  • @InsideTheWall41

it depends, really. The cup mute is probably used more often in a big band trumpet section, but the bucket mute is also used. It's not really a question of "best" but a question of "what sound is needed for a tune?" If you only can buy one mute, go with the cup mute. you'll use it more often....

  • ach! don't pay that much! you can find one at the "store" on my web site for 27 bucks, and it's a great mute. go to all about trumpet dot com (all one word), click on the "Music Store" in the navigation banner and choose "Trumpet Stuff." The mutes are under the "Trumpet Gear" heading on the left. Don't pay $40 for a straight mute! Hope I'm not too late....

  • There are three solos in a song my band is doing and I have to have a straight mute to get one. And it's like 40 bucks. sometimes I hate eBay

  • @beavis226 +1 on the Silent Brass! Maybe not the best for recording, because the preamp for it isn't the quietest, but the mute and the mic itself is great, and is wonderful for practicing!!!

I do wish Yamaha made a version with a dynamic mic or a full 48V condenser, cause the one in it now needs a mutant form of Phantom Power, so you're stuck with the little preamp box that comes with it :(

  • @ThatsaCryinShame

Nice! King Oliver (Louis Armstrong's mentor) used to grab a glass and use that as a mute, so you're in great company.....

  • @jharnum i did it with the glass top of a scented candle kinda cool and saves my family grief
