A short video made from one of the better American Splendor stories. My private homage to Harvey, who I was lucky enough to meet once.
Music is the instrumental "Diane" by R. Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders.

  • ...how little the screenwriters of the film "American Splendor" made up. I always thought they created the line "Right now I'd be glad t'trade growth for happiness." Its wonderful, not to mention important, for me to discover the origin of this line.

Hopefully one of the good things that can come from Pekar's death is a reissuing of the original 17 issues of American Splendor (of course, provided that the profits go to his wife and kid).

  • @Beck19781 :

Thanks for the thoughts. You might want to check out The Pekar Project, which has posted some newer works by Harvey with others. I don't know if these will be collected or just posted, but many are quite good. But then, it's Harvey!

Secondly - and if I've never stressed anything in my life enough, its this - thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU, for including a story that is not currently in print. None of the anthologies include this story "A Dialogue", which is from American Splendor 7. I've never read it. What's particularly revelatory to me is that it reinforces..

  • @Beck19781 My honor. I met Harvey at a signing once, and had him to myself for a brief time. I'd like to see these all in print too!

  • I have read the Pekar Project stuff. Its interesting that Harvey was moving in this direction, given how much of a technophobe he was. But, of course, he always handled the writing end.

I'd be very interested in hearing the story of your meeting with Pekar. Man, there's so much I would have liked to have asked him.
