Aaron, I love how you aren't afraid to say what ever the hell you want :)

The problem doesn't seem to be as much with competition as it is with parents and society raising children to be externally directed rather than internally.

Exactly, Stargazer5781. It is a shame that the capitalism vs socialism debate is so frequently mislabeled as a competition vs cooperation debate. In fact, free market capitalism beats socialism both in the levels of competition and cooperation.

I don't find competition as distasteful as you do, Aaron, but I do agree with some of what you said. I think if people really like something, they'll just want to get good at it. As well, even in the market, lots of folks simply like satisfying customers rather than competing with other companies. They simply wanna see that they're making people happy. So, cooperation also accounts for a big part of that...and of course the actual enjoyment of an activity plays a part as well.

I think it depends on the person. I remember with some things when I was ranked and saw that I was "low on the ladder" so to speak, it made me feel competitive in it and made me want to improve. On the whole though, I preferred to do the stuff that I just enjoyed for themselves.

Oh, and about the free market - what I like to point out is how many people you COOPERATE with on a free market compared to how many you compete with. To make this comment I'm cooperating with google, Microsoft, the electric company, the plastic makers who made my keyboard, Samsung who made my monitor, the people who built my desk, and so on. Life's all about working together. Competing's like .001% of life.

The children who don't serve their customers will go out of business! What's your problem!? :-p
Rose was talking to me about this last night! I agree with you completely. Case and point - children who get pushed to succeed in singing/dancing/talent shows early on life are SO OFTEN miserable later on (though that's probably combined with sucky parenting). Great video as always Aaron!! :-)
You get the best craftsmanship out of amateur and hobbyist in any realm.
Even the example you gave in coding. An amateur can afford to comb over his program 50 times to makes sure it is optimized and free of any possible error. A pro has to actually sell his services and good enough is good enough.
I personally brew bea as a hobby, I'll enter into a contest if it's close but the reason I brew isn't to win contests.

I have several friends who brew beer. One of my friends and brother have made a bunch of podcasts about brewing beer and such. i think they are going to put them up soon.

maybe its better to help them deal with it properly than try to exclude them from it. you can't keep them from competition anyway.

I wouldn't exclude it in any way, but I don't consider it a fact of life really ... especially the way i am inferring. What is a type of competition that i can't keep my children from?

sure, you can keep your children from all kinds of competition. just lock them up in your basement, and make sure they can't be in contact with each other.

You didn't address what I wrote at all. I don't believe in keeping most anything from my children. Why don't I feel in competition in my activities and life in general ... but my kids must somehow?
