Les Calanques, Le Trayas (Forêt Domaniale de l'Estérel), Commune de St. Raphael, Provence, France.

(Near Théoule Sur Mer)

April 2009.

The Estérel Forest goes all the way down the mountain side to the coast, where it ends at the railway line and coast road. It's a lovely place, offering great, more trying walks, and I saw a lot of walkers this mid spring. I was surprised to see a good number of groups of 7 to 10 or more persons with rucksacks bigger than daypacks. I wondered if they were friends or societies or if there are hill walking tour operators organising tours here. It's steep but allows for walks that shouldn't be too trying if you're not going up all of the time. Think laterally.

The forest is all the more amazing because it's virtually the first part of Le Côte D'Azur in France from the East, east even of Nice, from around Monaco, which is not built up. Taking the train west from Nice, I was reminded, the whole coastline is well populated with scarcely a break in development until this forest, which is quite close to the quite sprawling city of Cannes. They're attractive places along the coast, but I had thought there would be more, or more or less anything, in the way of wilderness.

Seeing a snorkler nearby in the sea stirred me out of my sunbathing reverie and I started recording, as I was listening to some Palestrina. The music of this video is the background sounds picked up by the video recorder, which make it a pretty good example of the sound recording capabilities of the Digilife DDV-1080 HD camcorder. There is no audio track added to this film.

I thought there's a reasonable amount of interest in the video. Though it was better I realised after a minute or so that a snorkler is not going to do backflips for you, and a snorkler doesn't make a lasting above water subject in itself. And the music turned out to make for a pleasant film. I didn't plan in advance to record what I was listening to from a portable C.D. player costing 5 pounds or so and a travel speaker costing less than 3 pounds. The water was lovely to swim in - so refreshing at this time of year.

The music is from the Missa Papae Marcelli (Pope Marcellus Mass) by Giovanni Perluigi di Palestrina, the old Italian Renaissance master.

The singers are the choir of Westminster Cathedral, who interestingly visited my city, Belfast, earlier tonight as I write this, giving a concert in the R.C. cathedral in Belfast. I intended to go to that, but happened to forget about it until just before it was to start, seeing the flyer I pinned to the noticeboard when I had ordered an Indian take away to arrive 20 minutes after it started. Damn! (Lovely food though!)

Please respect: no copyright infringement intended. The music happened to be real background sound when filming. Anyway, some further promoting: you can buy this recording on Compact Disc:
