An unexpected visit to the bush to get and to make spears, part of the Rripangu Yirdaki Masterclass experience. The tree from which the spears are made from grows in the dense jungle. A suitable stem of the right length and girth is selected, cut, and then placed in a fire to soften the wood. When it is pliable, the spear shaft is straightened with the feet (and sometimes teeth)... ouch, hot! The bark is then removed, the shaft allowed to dry, and then spear points inserted into the heavy end of the shaft.
Rripangu Yirdaki acknowledges the support of the Yothu Yindi Foundation, Rio Tinto Alcan, and the Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources (DBIRD).
