I honestly don't understand why these pieces in particular and some of his piano works are considered 'difficult' works (to listen to). I find some of his songs challenging, but this piece is brilliant, intense music regardless of how it was composed. Besides which, half the horror film genre relies on musically apeing Webern. So that must make him a seminal pop culture figure!

Stravinsky on Webern: "Doomed to total failure in a deaf world of ignorance and indifference, he inexorably kept on cutting out his diamonds, his dazzling diamonds, of whose mines he had a perfect knowledge."

    And it's so true....

The non-tonal organization is a technique which denies the mathematical intrinsic nature of the sound, from which derives the triadic "language". It is indeed harder to follow, as proved by various experiments in music psychology. On the other hand, Webern's music is always very expressive and not difficult, even if so dissonant.

Wikipedia: "His work was labeled as post-structuralism and associated with postmodern philosophy."

Why are we talking about Derrida here again?

Webern is a true giant and wrote splendid music. This piece is simply beautiful. Webern is not just cerebral but had a deep sense of what the human brain can take, a sense of proportions, something that most post-webern composers did not have, being too dogmatic and cerebral with too little or no compassion. Bravo Webern. Excellent interpretation (I do prefer the string quartet version)

Horror or suspense films definitely came to mind listening to this WONDERFUL piece of genious music. Bunch of super musicians too. Wish I could play like that! The piece tells a story - you can really imagine while listening. I was at a BBQ yesterday and a man there mentioned this name Anton Webern as a couple of us played violin duets of Christian hymns and talked about music. Had to come look this guy up today. Reminds me of Bartok somewhat, only more melodic.

I suppose that this may be "difficult" if your whole concept of classical music runs with the more accessible baroque compositions that are so often placed at the top of the list. This is quite enjoyable and very interesting, and actually makes a lot of sense.
