Where did you buy the crucible? I have been trying to find a good one forever!

gypsum, portland, soapstone....they will break down as the temperature goes higher. anyhow, the burner setup is really ingenious and i guess as long as it is done the right way there is little danger to it.
one more thing, the hot gases have to travel around the crucible, sort of like a tornado. hence the burner needs to be placed tangentially to the inner cylinder

this crucible came from a water filter, but as you may have seen was not very efficient
