Obama messed up by jumping the gun starting the repeat before Roberts had finished "do solemnly swear" and Roberts messed up by putting "faithfully" at the end of the sentence instead of in the middle. Obama had probably memorized the oath and that change messed him up, but I don't think Roberts did it on purpose. Both messed up. Review past oaths and you will see this is an accurate assessment. They were both nervous, I expect.

Roberts: "...that I will execute the office of President to the United States faithfully..."

Article 2 of the Constitution: "...that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States..."

The Chief Justice made a mistake. He should have had the oath written out in front of him to read like every other Chief Justice before him, not have it memorized. Even Justice Stevens had the Vice Presidential oath written out on a piece of paper when he delivered it to Joe Biden.
