Amos isn't pathetic. In fact, he's the only character that isn't pathetic. He's the only character that's honest, loyal, and selfless. The rest of them would step on just about anyone to get to the top and only help others if it benefits them. However, since it's a dog eat dog world, people like Amos and manipulated, used, and then just forgotten. The reason he can't win is because he's not pathetic, not because he is pathetic.

It broke my heart when he said "I hope I didn't take up too much of your time." :( </3

I like Amos' number a lot. It's one of my favorite scenes. Because it's honest and human and all of that "razzle dazzle" you speak of is all a show because everyone wants to be big and impressive and famous, more than anything. Amos just wants to be treated like a human being. That's a large part of the meaning behind the song, hence the words "a human being is made of more than air"

John C. Reilly really is an amazingly versatile and genuinely brilliant actor and person. Both as a dramatic and as a comedic actor.

I think of Amos as Loyal and Honest. Certainly not pathetic. In fact, what is pathetic is how the other characters in Chicago step on each other to be famous. Amos is a right up guy :)
