I'm on to you, Troy! The way you're dressed, you look as though you just came back from dinner with the family, sent the kiddies up to their rooms & snuck downstairs for some "me" time! You broke out the camera, fired up the willing Fender & said, "let me show thousands of Geddy disciples how it's done!" And that is exactly what you did...you showed me how it's done! I'm lovin' it!

It would be wrong if you didn't.

Hah. Thanks.

Are you posting all these Rush covers so Geddy can use them to brush-up before a tour?
Keep on Rockin' man.

Great playing! I wish I could play half as good as you do! How do you get such a similar to Geddy's tone? I have a fender Geddy Lee well, but it sounds too clean. I wish I could get it growlier. Any tips?

Thanks a lot. I'm playing straight into my little practice amp so there is no sophisticated eq-ing or processing going on with my sound. I tell people all the time that I think it has a lot to do with how the bass is set up - with light strings, low action and the neck set nearly straight. And the way I strike the strings. It's my opinion that a whole lot of Geddy's sound comes from the buzz, clack and grind he gets as much as from the fundamental notes themselves.

Learning this song essentially verbatim is no small feat. I commend you. I'm curious as to how you learned it in terms of websites or sheet/tabs? I find that I usually need to use a few different sources before I am satisfied with the final product. Kids today have no idea how easy they have it although I'm not sure if it's all together a good thing. It sure makes it easier to learn covers properly. Keep up the good work!

Thank you. I learned all these songs completely by ear. I'm not proud of the fact that I never learned to read music but I know that many of those "songbooks" are notoriously incorrect. It still takes someone with a good ear in order to listen to the music and transcribe it correctly. I have no problem with someone using tabs in conjunction with their own ear but many of the people requesting tabs are really asking to be spoon fed.

@TJH3113 You have very good ears! The main problem that I have had over the years has been not being able to pick the bass notes out of the mix. A lot of the prog rock bands (Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, etc.) had the bass mixed pretty hot so you could hear the individual notes. Bands like the Stones had the bass mixed down and Wyman's basslines were more difficult to decipher. Anyway, I broke down and have learned Red Barchetta. Fun to play. Thanks so much for the help.

With regard to the prog bands you mentioned, not only is the bass set louder in the mix, the tone is often higher in frequency as well, making it a bit easier to distinguish. Some stuff like Motown and the Stones and such, the bass is so muddy and murky it becomes much more difficult to pick out the notes.
