Researchers from the University of Washington (UW) and Microsoft Research Connections (MRC) are working together to develop a non-invasive, technological solution that promises to improve both the health and overall quality of life for diabetics: a contact lens that monitors blood glucose levels. This innovative solution represents a trend in technology, the Natural User Interface (NUI).

That sounds amazing. I have two questions (I couldn't find the answer in the case study):
1. Power source? Is there "just" a passive RC circuit in the lens and someone can get the current value reading with a wireless device? Or it's active and has some kind of battery?
2. If tear can be used for measurement, can it be used without the lens? So the patient would tear periodically throughout the day and some external device would gathers/sample and read. That would be cheaper?
