it's actually an honor if you miss. You simply sit on the floor, where sooner or later you get too tired to hold the bar. It eventually rolls forward, pushing your head into your ass, where you kiss it goodbye. It's the weightlifter version of Seppuku, or harakiri.

Technique. There are loads of vids and articles about squatting. The best way I have experienced so far, to improve your technique, is having someone check it for you while lifting, and make him tell you what flaws you have.
Technique is rather simple, when you don't lift, but when you do lift, its rather complicated.

Your knees should be ok, just make sure to build the muscle in your legs as a whole, don't become unbalanced.
