Trio concertant No. 1 in F sharp minor, Op. 1/1, for piano, violin and cello (1840)

I. Andante con moto

This piano trio is the début composition of César Franck (1822-1890), the first published work of the Trios concertants, Opp. 1-2 (The other three trios are also posted on this channel). It took me a while to appreciate this work, but now it has become one of my favourite pieces of chamber music, especially when given such a breathtaking, passionate performance. The recording is from a 1983 recital given by Sviatoslav Richter (piano), Oleg Kagan (violin) and Natalya Gutman (cello) in Moscow.

  • Hmmm, every time I've played this, I've used a very legato style to the piano, instead of staccato/choppy. It's a very good recording, but it seems to lack true emotion. I'll post my trio's version up soon.

  • Splendid music by one of Classical music's better composers, and the pride of Belgium. It is unfathomable to me why so many talk ill of his music.

  • Amazing. Simply amazing.
