Chasing 261, Australia got off to a flying start through powerful hitting from Mark Waugh and Michael Di Venuto, as well as some indifferent New Zealand fielding early on. They added 156 before Di Venuto (77 from 74 balls) was stumped off Vettori, then Waugh followed 46 runs later after bring up a fine century (104 from 113). From 2/202 the Australians should have cruised to victory, however terrific spells from medium pacers Gavin Larsen and Chris Harris slowed the pace and exploited nervousness to spark a middle-order collapse. The home team lost the dangerous Gilchrist to a brilliant Harris run out, then Blewett, Harvey, Steve Waugh and Warne all departed, some because of injudicious slogging. However Michael Bevan, so often Australia's lower-order saviour during the 1990s, saw them home with two balls to spare.

0.38 seconds in typical Aussie umpires, how could this not be out LBW, give yourself an upper cut! Pitching on middle and hitting middle 3 inches up!!!

Loved the cricket in 1990s when team used have to same format/design jerseys - World Series, WC 1992, WC1996, VB Series ... same pattern with different colours that made an interesting view

Di Venuto was out plump here! But he played some really good shots after that blunder.

Wish that guy was given a longer run though. He was a naturally attacking player and would have went on to make a mark for himself & Aus Team had he given significant opportunity. Stuart Law, Greg Blewett & even Ponting back then make me feel sick ... i would choose Di Venuto over these any time!

I was at this game. I think it was the first Australian match where the, now removed, retractable lights were used. I also recall Gilchrist getting booed when he came out to bat because many thought Healy was dropped too early.
