If a person cues with missing fingers, you actually CAN figure out what he's saying because the movement represents vowels. The handshapes represent consonants but since they're missing, you can just look at his lips and you'll pretty know what he's cueing based on simple deduction.
With ASL, it's even more difficult because ASL depends heavily on handshapes and non-manual signals aren't enough.
I am deaf and fluent in both ASL and Cued English.
I'm learning cued speech for my friend who can't use his right hand to sign. He's trying, but it makes his signing slow and often difficult to understand without proper handshapes and placement within the signing space. Cuing is perfect for him! For myself, I prefer ASL. It's faster and just plain fun!
I agree that you can still understand ASL with lost fingers or paralized hand because I've seen Deaf do it. Also I've read about a Deaf man who was in accident and very badly burned and also become blind because of burned face and also lost his hands because of burned hands. He want to keep aware and involved in world news etc but since Deaf can't use audiotapes and since no fingers can't read braille. But he still learned to read Braille with his tongue!!! Way to go!

obvious ASL is not Sin of world but it's for God's Will
God have many reason for that !
I've noticed many people can insult Deaf people but can't insult wheelchair people
but God's point of view about wheelchair people, Blind, Deaf are same.
hope they can respect God's work not just handicapped !
