It had to do with the Standard Speed (in R.P.M.s) of Electric Motors and Gear-Ratios ... the Same Formulas were-used to adopt the Other "Standard" Recording/PlayBack Speeds of 45 & 33+1/3rd & 16+2/3rds R.P.M.s ... Prior to This "Standardization" of 78-R.P.M.s , Records were recorded-at a Wide Variety of Speeds ... THOMAS EDISON's EDISON RECORDS LABEL Discs were 10"-in-Diameter + "thicker" than "Norma" 78s , and played at a Speed of 80-R.P.M.s

  • why were records at such a high speed back then, anyone have any answers, just curious.
