@MrMasonx742 yeah sanders is definitely specifically the best runner ever, but the "runningback" position is a lot more than just running. basically sanders was just really good at one thing which was being elusive. payton also had some elusiveness himself but also had power, he also ran great routes and made great catches, he threw for 40+ yard touchdown passes, had the greatest stiff arm ever, and was the best blocking back of all time. sanders = greater runner, payton = greater runningback

As a young man I watched Jim Brown, O.J. and others. But there was never a player like Payton. He was the greatest electrifying running back ever. The first time I saw him I became an instant Bears fan. He was like hockey's Gretzky, Golf's Tiger or any other superstar that eclipses their sport. Payton was pure magic. Every time he touched the ball, fans on both sides were on the edge of their seats because they knew it was a potential run for the end zone. #34 RIP. We miss you.

@gobux19 that would be true.... if it were true.
-sanders ran behind 3 multi-time probowl line, 2 of which were 1st team all pro and one of which will eventually be inducted into hall of, these linemen were lomas brown, kevin glover, and jeff hartings, the first time payton finally had even 1 lineman that made even one pro-bowl was jay hilgenberg and he didnt start for the bears until 1984 already paytons 10th season (the entire length of sanders career)

Yeah because Barry Sanders played for an all-star loaded team. Peyton is only better than sanders in one category... running people over. Barry Sanders is unquestionably the greatest of all time for doing more with less and doing it with consistency.

i hate how no one mentions earl campbell in any best rb discussions and no one even remembers that earls rookie season was the first season the oilers made it to the playoffs since the merger

walter payton, LT, and lynn swan, my favorite players ever
Okay let's look at this with the proper perspective. You take ANY of these other RB's off their ALL STAR loaded teams & you put them on the SUCKY Bears teams of the late 70's & early 80's for 10 years & THEN you'd OBVIOUSLY understand what Walter Payton did. When WP set up in the backfield there were 22 eyes on him & 22 legs coming at him. WP was POUNDED brutally for 13 years & missed maybe 2 games! He was the SOLE focus of every defense on every play. There WAS no one else on the Bears. AWESOME

@indigo6band he actually only missed 1 game out of 191 (over 200 if you count playoffs) and the only one he missed was not because of injury, it was during his rookie season in 1975 in a game against the steelers and the coach decided to let another runningback play the game instead.
