Bear in mind that there are distinct differences between styles and various evolutions of kata. Your sensei is correct in that people both teach and learn differently, hence the evolution of kata variance leading to style variance.

Very different from the version my Sensei (Shorin ryu Matsubyashi ryu) taught me.

Who is/was your sensei? Where did you study? Matsubayashi Ryu kata do look a lot different.
