December 1994. Alan comes home early and this somehow pisses off Monica. She resents that Alan is coming home to check up on her which he denies. Alan tells her that the cancer makes him cherish her that much more which causes Monica to scream that it makes her nervous. Alan yells back "Get over it." They argue as Alan has finally had it with being abused by Monica. AJ interrupts them and sides with Monica. Alan doesn't want to argue with both of them so he leaves. Monica tells AJ that she still has what it takes to tick him off. Later, Alan returns to apologize and they talk. Monica says she loves Alan so much she doesn't want to disappoint him and that is causing her to lose herself. She needs to leave for Arizona. Alan agrees but says he'll be lonely without her and wonders if she'll be lonely in Arizona.
Poor Alan, he really can't win. But it is true Alan and Monica fashion to lash out at each other when they each are hurting so terribly. This was AMAZING writing - it truly explored the depths of emotions these two were struggling with. And Monica's reaction to her disease was so very "monica" - she hates to be out of control and hates the fact that she needs help and support. Alan is sruggling with his own desperate fear and his longing help Monica in any way possible.

ITA Debbie...seeing this makes me wish they'd take this into consideration when addressing Monica's rehab from drinking.
Also, don't you just love how AJ is so protective of his mom...Sean Kanan was a good AJ.
