The Winchester Model 70 is a bolt action sporting rifle. It has an iconic place in American sporting culture and has been held in high regard by shooters since it was introduced in 1936, earning the epithet "The Rifleman's Rifle"[1]. The action has some design similarities to Mauser designs and it is a development of the earlier Winchester Model 54. The Model 70 was originally manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company between 1936 and 1980. From the early 1980s until 2006, Winchester rifles were manufactured by U.S. Repeating Arms under an agreement with Olin Corporation, allowing USRA to use the Winchester name and logo.[2] Model 70s were built in New Haven, Connecticut from 1936 to 2006, when production ceased. In the fall of 2007, announcements were made that Model 70 production would resume, and, as of 2008, new Winchester Model 70 rifles are now once more being made in Columbia, SC.
These guns in the video show changes and rarity of New 1981 OLIN Winchester Featherweights with sights(very very rare) to U.S. Repeating Arms without sights 1982 after their takover in June 0f 1981 .

Some History:USRAC (United States Repeating Arms Corp.) was formed and continued manufacturing Winchester brand rifles and shotguns under license from Olin Corp. on 7-20-1981. This final year of Olin production saw a new "XTR Featherweight". But very few actually made it to the dealers shelves before USRAC took over.

The only way I have been able to discern the difference is that the thin red/brown rubber Pachmayr buttplate would have been the only difference displaying either the name "Winchester" or "USRAC".

USRAC, which licenses the Winchester name from Olin Corp., was acquired by the French government owned defense contractor giant GIAT Industries in late 1990. FN( Fabrique Nationale)now produced them in South Carolina, U.S.
Here is another person site with serial numbers and year.

  • Maybe you guys can help me figure out the value of my winchester model 70. Its the featherweight model and was manufactured in 1956. Its very close to mint condition. It's a 30-06 version.

  • @sbccat I am just obsessed with the 70. I want a super grade in .270. Saving up but it just seems when I do, I have to spend it on crap like other presents. -_____-

  • @sbccat I don't know. All I know is that it had sights and scratch the red. It was a long time since he told me what it looked like. It was a 70A and he had it in the 70's, new.

  • Nice story! I just ordered a New Featherweight in 308. Cant wait to get it! :D
