UPDATE 9/6/07: Smokey has been adopted!

He is a three year old male who was badly neglected by his previous owner and was treated for Lyme disease. Until he was surrendered to rescue he had never seen a vet. He had never ridden in a car or even used stairs. We are fairly certain these photos show the first time he played with a ball. Smokey spent the first 3 years of his life living in a 4ft by 8ft kennel run with a dirt floor. A corner of the run was his bathroom and waste accumulated to a depth of two feet in that corner. His only exercise was digging a hole in the other corner. Smokey is living in a foster home in upstate New York. He will be brought back to health and offered for adoption later this fall. Can you chip in to help dogs like Smokey? http://www.cbrrescue.org/donations.htm

  • looks like a lab

  • Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are often confused with Chocolate Labs, but genetically they are very different from Labradors. Chessies are the result of crosses with Newfoundlands, hounds, setters, and water spaniels.

  • How are Cheesies with other dogs in a household? Like a pair of Bearded Collies?

  • I'm not familiar with Bearded Collies. To learn more about Chesapeakes please visit cbrRescue(dot)org.

  • To cbrsroo--That's good to hear! He looked sort of timid in the video... Poor guy. I hope he's really doing better. =)

  • From what I hear he's doing better every day and even has a potential home lined up. If you are interested in either making a donation to help dogs like Smokey or adopting a new best friend google Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief and Rescue.

  • wow. what a cutie! my chessie is like buddha. so wise

  • I cannot understand why someone would get a dog only to keep it in solitary confinement. You guys do great work. This is such an amazing breed.Don't know what I would do without my 2 Chessies.

  • Smokey is fostering with me now thanks to the many people who helped him. He is a great dog and this video really captures his charm. He is already housebroken, retrieves to hands , knows crate and is mastering steps!
