I wonder if it strikes anyone else as attention-borrowing. I mean, she's performing - she has the floor. It reminds me a little of the person in the audience who laughs the loudest because they want a little of the spotlight for themselves - they want to be heard appreciating something. It seems to reinforce the insular nature of the slam audience as well - I find it a little alienating.

@goodgrief78 While you may find it alienating, most performers internalize it as a sign of a good audience. Audible affirmation is encouraged and desired.
Performers feed off responsive crowds, and thusly perform better. We're stifled by silent ones.
