This is my 12 gallon tank right after a huge cleaning and redecoration. The plants were all covered in algae and most of them were shoved to the back of the tank. My fish would hang out boredly in the front of the tank, where there were no plants. Now they have places to explore and territory to claim. Also, I added one of the live java ferns from my betta tank. These plants have been quite prolific. I hope it does well here.

Tomorrow I plan to buy and quarantine two more female cherry barbs (orange stripe) and four neons to add to this tank so that all of the fish will be more comfortable. Safety in numbers! :)

  • Have you tried adding Otocinclus Catfish to keep the algae under control?

  • I've thought about it but read that they like to be in groups. Currently this tank is at its stocking limit. Also, I don't want to have to throw in algae pellets as they make such a mess. : P But I might get them for another tank I have. Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Would love to do something like this with my 10G tank. What are the dimensions of the tank, so that I can compare it to my 10G tank?

  • It's an irregular shaped tank, taller than it is high. I don't know the exact dimensions but it's actually not as long as a 10 gallon tank. You can probably find the dimensions by doing a google search on "12 gallon Eclipse aquarium."

  • Very lovely. I especially like the red fish? Are those cherry barbs?

  • The bright red fish are male cherry barbs. If you have males, it's best to have females as well, and always have at least one more females than there are males. (The females have an orange stripe).
