*UPDATE* March, 2010

I found out that this version was released in 1956, and it's on the "Historically speaking - The Duke". The trumpeter is Ray Nance :)

Thank you motorflygare1 and thanks everyone for helping!

I politely ask jazz lovers to help me find out what year Mr Ellington and his band recorded this version and who played the trumpet. (Was it Bubber Miley or someone else?)
This is one of the greatest jazz songs of all time, in my opinion. Sends shivers down my spine.. I've been loving this since my childhood days, so any possible help will be much appreciated :)

  • what an amazing piece, so dark, so gritty... so good

  • this is the 1937 version. it features cootie williams instead of bubber miley

  • He wrote this after visiting ESL, IL back in the day...they would perform at the big places in STL, MO and then go party in ESL afterwards!

  • now HE'S the DUKE.

  • listen to this and the Steely Dan version they are both great but what a difference!

  • Great version of this tune!

  • Thanks for posting. I first heard this on a vinyl compilation called "The Bethlehem Years". 1956 is correct. So is the Ray Nance comment. The album itself had some turkeys - remake of Ko-Ko for one. Also some major gems (this - and the original UMMG and Midriff, for example). Bottom line- well worth seeking out. The tune goes way back - to about 1927 - see the video response for a recording of how it was way back then.

  • I've heard many versions of this up tempo, but this slo drag version is new to me and by far my favorite! Thank you for sharing !
