Who is Raising This Generation?
As true as these words are, many students (and their families) fail to recognize the
importance of having an education. The statistics tell this story best:
¨ According to the US Department of education, the US graduates only 70% of its high school students.
¨ 7,000 students drop out of school every day -- more than 1.2 million each year. Dropouts from the class of 2007 will cost the United States more than $329 billion in lost wages, taxes, and productivity over their lifetimes.
¨ The average annual income for a high school dropout in 2005 was $17,299, compared to $26,933 for a high school graduate. A college graduate will earn more than $1 million more in their lifetimes than a high school dropout.
¨ If the dropouts from the class of 2006 had graduated, the nation would save more than $17 billion in Medicaid expenditures for uninsured care over the course of their lifetimes.
¨ Increasing the graduation rate and college matriculation of male students by just 5% could lead to combined savings and revenue of $8 billion each year by reducing crime related costs.
As you can see, America finds itself in a dropout crisis. This dropout epidemic is claiming the lives of millions of youth every 365 days. And its an epidemic that if not addressed aggressively, will continue to wreak havoc on families and communities in every state of our country. As we continue to reach out and partner with others to keep our young people in school, we are encouraged by the commitment and actions we see from so many other groups and individuals that truly want to find a cure for the disease of ignorance that has infected many communities, schools and families in this country. A disease that can only be eradicated through the collaborative efforts of we, us and others.
