Yo Yo Ma plays a Domenico Montagnana 1733 and also a Stradivarius cello. It is without a doubt these instruments that make the huge difference between merely sublime cello playing and sublimer cello playing!

Yea, originally for arpeggione, usually played on cello, but also performed on viola for a reason. I'm not sure how much of the reason why it sounds better on cello is because of Yo Yo Ma or the instrument. It's crazy that he can play as delicately on cello as anyone on viola as viola is a more delicate and pure-sounding instrument.
Having played this piece I realize how incredibly difficult it really is to have such expressive simplicity in the second movement. Amazing playing!

I think this sounds beautiful on cello and arpeggione. Arpeggione in my opinion sounds more interesting as opposed to the cello because I hear the cello all the time ;)
it was composed for arpeggione actually

One of the greatest pieces for cello ever composed, just marvellous.
