Cardinal Richelieu and his power-hungry entourage seek to take control of seventeenth-century France, but need to destroy Father Grandier - the priest who runs the fortified town that prevents them from exerting total control. So they seek to destroy him by setting him up as a warlock in control of a devil-possessed nunnery, the mother superior of which is sexually obsessed by him. A mad witch-hunter is brought in to gather evidence against the priest, ready for the big trial.

  • Looks like a nice print of the film in terms of colours and framing. Shame it's the castrated US print, missing four minutes of footage removed from the original 1971 UK cut - obviously, the further missing four minutes removed in 1971 and restored by Lucida in 2004 is nowhere to be seen! So this version of the film lacks EIGHT MINUTES of footage. Shame, cos it still looks fantastic.

  • @64MDL Damn! Thx for the information I was not aware about that!

  • Whoa, what on earth were they doing to that poor woman near the beginning who had those bubbles all over her?

Or do I really want to know?

  • Women in love is good too, at least i think so.

  • One interesting fact which this film doesn't mention is that in the real-life version of these events, Baron de Laubardemont was apparently the first cousin of the mother superior who accused him of witchcraft. Coincidence? Doubtful...very doubtful (although as I understand it, there's no evidence that her actions were motivated by anything other than her cousin's ambition).

  • @autophobe2e oh, the 19th of march, excuse me.

  • @KingRabbit i believe the complete, unedited version of the film is being made available in the UK on the 19th of February thanks to the lovely people at the BFI. 40 years is the very definition of "better late than never" :)

  • This might very well be my most favorite movie of all-time.

  • Greatness.

  • This film is a masterpiece that deserves an official release in its uncut version.

  • Bye, bye black bird. Awesome.

  • Grandier seems like a decent guy!
