A diverse panel featuring local talk show host Charlie Sykes and Shepherd Express columnist Joel McNally will debate and discuss whether the FCC ought to require radio stations to give liberals equal time, a policy known as the Fairness Doctrine. This wide ranging discussion will deal with the history, policy issues, legal questions, and politics surrounding this controversial issue. Also featured on the panel will be Chicago radio host and producer Guy Benson and Professor Erik Ugland, a lawyer and faculty member of Marquette's College of Communications.
I welcome the Fairness Doctrine, as a matter of Federal Statute and not merely "public policy", with open arms. The concept dates back to the early days of broadcasting and is predicated upon the axioms that (1) the airwaves belong to ALL Americans, not merely com corporations, and (2) that broadcasters are licensed to act in the public interest. The Doctrine IS constitutional (FCC v. Red Lion Communications) and is long overdue as law.
