Tulsa Union Redskin 2011 State Championship Tarnished by Racist Mascot and Images

Savage Country VII: While Tulsa Union High School enjoyed a thrilling victory over Broken Arrow in the 2011 6A High School Playoffs, the fact remains that citizens, students, and faculty must endure the embarrassing racist epithet of Redskin, and stereotypical American Indian imagery to represent their team. What a shame the school district can not really enjoy the win that resulted from tremendous hard work on the part of the team, coaches, parents, band, cheer squads, boosters, and fans. No matter what, the school is still stuck with a racist mascot, ossified in their stubbornness that predates Native Americans being citizens of the United States,not to mention the entire Civil Rights Movement. Come on Union, it's the 21st century!

We, as Union students, in no shape or form "make fun" of Native Americans whatsoever. We are PROUD of our traditions and our mascot. Go to our pep rallies and see it for yourselves. Do you go to our school? See it from OUR perspectives. We don't intend it to be racist whatsoever.

The incident regarding the tee pee pole was a straight up accident. I was down there w/ them The person carrying the pole did not see the other guy at all. You weren't down there, so do not make false accusations.

There's one thing wrong with this accusation and that is that you do not attend Union High School. You ask any student past or present how they feel about the "teepee toy" and they will respond with, not a toy but a tradition, not a racist stereotype but a pride for Oklahoma's history, not a tomahawk chop but a sense of remembrance for those who were here before us. In no way does Union diminish the native americans, rather we embrace their heritage and history. Im sorry you could not attend UHS

whoever made this video is just mad cause union won state.. im from vian and im cherokee indian and i dont find this racsist. union redskins is a badass name for a team. anything that has t do with indian culture is badass for a football team

Ok really we are all Redskins for life not 'racists for life'. We are proud of who we are none the less Native Americans are the minority race at Union believe-it-or-not. Plus I would be willing to bet this was made by a white person. I'm full blood Native American and I don't find our school colors a single bit racist.

please take this video down our school has students of all raises, we never once make rasist remarks about native americans. our school board doesnt allow us a mascot because of rasism, this means that our school is very aware of keeping the rasism image away.

OK I DONT GO TO UNION BUT IM DAMN SURE THEY ARE PROUD OF THEIR HERITAGE I MEAN THERE ARE ALOT OF SCHOOLS IN OKLAHOMA(NATIVE AMERICA) THAT ARE HONERED AND PROUD TO HAVE INIDAN HERITAGE AND UNION IS ONE OF THEM
