At the end of each season, about 600 horses depart the Island for their winter pasture in Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours and Gough's Livery have farms where the horses are given free roaming access with heated barns and special feed throughout the winter. Come spring, they head back to Mackinac Island to begin their summer work. Mackinac island, Michigan prohibits personal vehicles, residents and tourists get around via horse, horse drawn carriages, bicycles and by foot.
