This selection includes two tracks exclusive to the Famicom version. The Japanese release included an introduction to the game, as well as an island map that would appear in-between stages. There were some other nice touches too, including animated background imagery and an unlockable sound test.

To make all of that work, Contra needed a special mapper-- an additional chip for memory and storage within the cartridge itself. In Japan, third party companies like Konami had the freedom to use whatever additional mappers they could develop. In the US, Nintendo of America made it so that third party companies could only use additional mappers made by Nintendo, none of which (at the time) were suitable to Konami's needs.

Ultimately, they went ahead and stripped down the US release so it could work without the VRC2 chip they developed, and this lead to the cutting of a couple tracks of music. The European release, censored to replace humans with robots, was a port of the US version and thus lacked the same two tracks as well.

Hope you enjoy this complete version of the original soundtrack!

  • After all that shooting and blasting, what an ending!

    CONGRATULATIONS!

YOU'VE DESTROYED THE VILE RED FALCON AND SAVED THE UNIVERSE! CONSIDER YOURSELF A HERO.

  • They certainly do...

They let you play the whole game over again, on a harder difficulty! XP

  • Gotta love how even in victory, they play the failure music in the end:

"Hold on a sec, don't just get all happy now. You have a harder difficulty ahead. And super contra..."

BTW, I have heard that music (1:19-1:25) way too often throughout the years :s

Still, without a doubt, one of the best games ever made!

  • @tbone2004 Dude, the game is fun as fuck!! Great ending!

  • @Drag0nTrainer Nope, I whip out my psp and beat it regularly.

  • I'm a hero!!!

  • @Drag0nTrainer No, I passed the game with an emulator without that code too, I didn't even know about it until I saw many comments in many Contra videos mentioning it.

I even could pass the game twice in a day without any cheats. Anyways, Contra III is way harder than this one, even the Normal difficulty is really challenging!.

  • @Drag0nTrainer i don't believe it ._.

  • Am I the only one that beaten this game without the konami core? ;_;

  • wow, released in 1987, i was only 4 years old, but i dont think i knew what a video game was until maybe 2 years a later? i dunno, its been over 20 years

  • HEY IT'S TERMINATOR AND ROCKY! XD

  • the ending music for contra and super c sounds like a kids game but contra 3 the alien wars sounds like a teenager game
