Ontario Second Career scandal on CKCO TV News - November 2009

This is a segment CKCO TV News/CTV Southwestern Ontario did about the failure of the Ontario Second Career program and how the cutbacks have effected people in Waterloo Region.

Back in March 2009, I entered the Ontario Second Career program. I was told I was eligible and met all of the criteria needed for me to apply for funding for schooling. As of June 2009, I was accepted into Conestoga College's 'Network Administration - Engineering and Design program'. After countless seminars, one-on-one meetings with a facilitator from Second Careers and so on and so forth, I submitted my application to the Ontario Ministry of Training, Universities and Colleges in August 2009.

Recently (as of last week - November 26th, 2009), I was told I no longer qualify for this program. The Ontario Government has retroactively made thousands of applications null and void. This is a pure cost-cutting measure that totally ignores the lives it has left in limbo as a result.

I have taken it upon myself to write to my local MPP, Elizabeth Witmer (Conservative) and the Minister responsible for the MTCU - Kitchener's (my hometown and twin city to Waterloo where I live) very own John Milloy (Liberal). I haven't heard a word from either of these politicians! Now I aim to show them the power of the Internet.

I have voted Liberal all of my life for both provincial and federal elections. It's very likely my vote is going to be going elsewhere in the next provincial election.

You've been very lucky then. My understanding is that they're trying to rush as many people through the program as possible before it runs out of money again. Good luck!

I've finished my schooling regardless of what the government didn't do for me and have a job in the pipeline, so I'm happy.

No, they won't. You'd be hard pressed to find Second Career funding anything at this point because the program has run out of money. Rumours are it's going until the end of this month.

What we need is alot more negative media attention on second careers. This program in my eyes is a failure and we need to put presure on the government to make large improvements to this porgram. The liberal government will not get my vote!

I've been trying to get the media to bite on this, but strangely they haven't. My local media has already bitten and that's as far as I ever got with them.

I'm not sure why the media hasn't paid more attention, but I think it's been lost in the stories of eHealth, Haiti, the proroguing of Parliament, etc.

The thing is,un-fortunately,you cant even claim bankruptcy on a student loan,so,for student loans know that they got you by the short hairs,literally...I say they should dump this program- If *YOU* dont get the job,then they dont get their money....Kinda like pro-bono...

Second Career does suck.This video was upped in 2009,I was there yesterday,and its *EXACTLY* like the guy described,it happened to me,too.

The people working at MTCU aren't any help either from my experience. They'll just direct you to you the nearest YMCA employment centres who make you fill out a bunch of forms so that they can show that people are interested in their programs so that they can keep their own jobs. John Milloys sucks!

John Milloy has failed so many of us. He's a big reason I'm not voting Liberal come October.

They also will not fund any programs that are cheap in cost. I was looking for assistance and was told the amount did not meet the minimum requirement. I guess this program wants to spend the money as fast as possible so they can quickly ask for more and call that a success when only a selected 1% get the assistance they need because they have an inside connection of some sort. I refer to it as carefully executed money laundering.

Student loans wants to get their money I basically tell them "Well I didnt get a job and you dont get your money so i guess we both get fucked over"
