Geology Rocks: Ulexite Demo

I show a few of the samples in my rock collection and talk a bit about the interesting light transmission properties of Ulexite. It's sometimes called TV Rock or TV Stone because it acts like a fiber optic. It's kind of hard to capture on film, but a fun rock to play around with as you can see.

@kiwiqueen sorry but that ulexite. gypsum doesnt do this, and it has a 'bladed' crystal structure, and can be scratched with the fingernail. all of these things ulexite doesnt have.

@stevenscottoddballz It is supposed to be Ca, not Ba. Ulexite is hydrated sodium calcium borate hydroxide.

Another thing to note: I have a card that was included with my "T.V. Rock". It states the crystallography as: "NaBaB5O9 - 8H20". Yours says "Ca" instead of "Ba".

Oh to be a Geologist in the US!
I am just back from a field trip to Dingle,Co Kerry 3days ago and my note book still has not dried out.The area we went to was a semi arid desert -type area about 300my...........be nice if we drifted south again :-)

I hate to say it, but your sample looks more like gypsum than ulexite. Satin spar gypsum is transparent with fractures while ulexite is more opaque with discolored freckles and usually without fractures. At 2:14, ulexite would display text clearly on the surface, even from a side angle in the near dark, and your piece looks blurry unless viewed from directly above. It looks like you got gypped! (haha gypsum, gypped, the similarity makes sense don't you think?)

No it is definately Ulexite. The video doesn't do it justice, and it is obviously not gypsum when studied up close. But thanks for the comments.

what so special about this stone? only transparent?

No not just transparent but it transmits the image to the surface of the stone so it looks like the words are being shown on a screen.
