Love Bites—Chapter 6
Unfortunately, Joe spoke before me.
Joe- I know you have your questions, but just dont ask them. (He sighed) I think its best if we dont talk. If we were to never meet. I think youd be better off.
Demi- How do you know Id be better off? Do you think Id be better off getting raped by Tay—?
Joe- Would you just stop? (He stared at me long and hard. I wanted him to watch the road, especially at the speed we were at.)
Demi- (I crossed my arms and looked down) Just keep your eyes on the road and take me home . . .
Joe- Listen—
Demi- You say that a lot. (I looked back up) And why cant we be friends? Maybe even more than that? (Okay, that last line wasnt supposed to escape my mouth.)
Joe- (He smiled the slightest then became serious again) Its for the best.
Demi- You dont know whats best for me. (We pulled up to my house. Weird, I didnt even have to give him directions. I started to get out of the car.)
Joe- Then whats best for you? (I gave him a good look)
Demi- You. (I saw his facial expression soften and I shut the door.)
I felt as if I had spilt my guts and fallen face first into a sidewalk for this guy. This wasnt like me. His beauty lured me in and his mysterious ways kept me hanging. I loved the thrill but how much longer could I chase him? If he doesnt want to be with me, maybe I should just leave him alone. Then Id be pretty awkward between me and him, especially with me being friends with his siblings—well, most of them—but definitely Selena. No matter what Joe said, I wanted to keep on with the chase. I wanted to be with him.
I slumped on the couch with Dave after dinner. We sat and watched football.
Demi- Are you kidding me?! (I yelled at the TV) That was a terrible call!
Dave- Geez scout, calm down. (He laughed)
Demi- Sorry, you know how I am.
Dave- We better get to bed.
Demi- Agreed.
I crept into bed. I finally got comfortable when I jumped up. Man was I paranoid. I thought I had seen a shadow. Getting up from the bed, I walked over to my window. There was nothing there. I lie back down and shake my head, telling myself, You need sleep.
Once asleep, I could see everything that couldnt happen in real life.
In my dream, Joe came into my room late at night.
Demi- Joe did you just crawl through my window?
Joe- Yeah, I needed to see you. (He leans into me and kisses my neck softly)
The next thing I know, were making sweet love on my bed.
I hear a chuckle and snap awake, afraid that I could be making noises in my sleep. Why is my hand in my pajama pants?
Im almost out of the door in the morning when I see a familiar vehicle.
Demi- Are you kidding me? (I walk up to the car and sigh) What are you doing here?
Joe- I want to apologize. Do you need a ride? (Obviously I do not. He parked right next to my car, but hey, I can save on gas.)
Demi- Sure, I guess. (I get in the passenger seat)
He hasnt said anything and I question why he even tries.
Demi- Nice weather were having, huh? (I said sarcastically and look out the window. The rain is just barely coming down.)
Joe- (He laughs a laugh that feels like a knife in my arm; so sharp and sudden.) Most definitely. I really do feel sorry about yesterday. I shouldnt have been so rude. (Ya think?)
Demi- Apology accepted.
He smiles and we pull into the parking lot. His sister Miley glares at us as we drive up.
Demi- Hey, I dont want to be rude or anything but, how do they date when theyre . . . related? (I bit my lip at the last word. I enjoyed the Jonas family, really I do, but that whole incest thing kind of throws me off.)
Joe- (He chuckles softly) Kevin Sr. and Denise took us in when we were . . . younger. We arent related by blood and the only ones who call us brother and sister are Selena and everyone else. We arent though. (Im confused but I wont bother with it.)
Demi- One more question, why is Miley glaring at me? (We both looked up and she was now making out with Kevin.) Or, never mind . . .
Joe- She doesnt hate you or anything. Shes just not used to you. (He placed his hand on mine and I shivered. He saw and pulled back quickly.) Hurry, lets get inside before the bell rings.
