Filmed and Edited by Dr. Diana Wehrell-Grabowski. International Surfing Day was celebrated around the world today, June 20th, 2009. Surfrider Foundation Cocoa Beach Chapter had a full-day of activities planned to help educate the local community as to the many endeavors it has undertaken and has planned in the future.
An educational/informative table was set up at the local Cocoa Beach public library. In addition, a near by beach was chosen to hold several environmentally-based activities as well as surfing.
The Cocoa Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is a relatively new chapter yet it has accomplished quite a bit within a years time.
After many months of surveying the beach community for areas in need of cigarette abatement and dune protection, in February many volunteers showed up to help plant hundreds of sea oats, rope off the dunes, and place cigaratte butt cans on beach access walkways. Each street that was targeted has a stake holder. A stake holder is an individual(s) who takes the responsibility to oversee that the cigarette butt can is emptied daily and that the stakes and ropes used to protect the dunes are in good condition.
A second phase of the initial sea oat planting took place about one month later when Sea Grapes and Saw Palmettos were planted up above the dune line area.
Surfrider Foundation Cocoa Beach Chapter meets once monthly on the the third Tuesday of the month. The meeting is held at the Cocoa Beach Surf Museum, located within the Ron Jon's sport complex.

I dont like the way that the camera makes it look like it was a stormy day, I was there. There couldn't have been a better day for surfing(:

FYI- the intro surf footage is taken from earlier surf sessions in the season. The paddleout etc.. is from ISD. It's not the camera.
