  • Two questions (assuming you see Oz here normally): 1) How long does the evening last when the band plays, and 2) is the use of the Lenny Breau-style harmonics relatively a new thing?

  • @xpaddy01 this was the only time i've seen Oz, but he still has a regular Monday night slot at The Bitter End. that night he did 2 sets starting at 10:30. don't know about the harmonics. thanks for checking out the vids!

  • @extplay Much obliged for your response! From a musicians stand-point I wondered how long an average gig might be (I've a mindset of 4 hours). I can see it's the same, but broken into 2 sets. I've only seen Oz through clips over the past two years. This is the first time I've seen him do it. This, after he'd be to Austin, TX and jammed with Eric Johnson, who does it a lot! I bet he picked it up from him! ;)

  • @xpaddy01 4 hours seems high to me. i think it's more like 2 sets of about an hour each, give or take a few minutes. but i haven't been there enough to say for sure.

  • What a monster.

  • Here's a tip to the uninformed: When preparing for a 'shoot'(yes, even a spur-o-the-moment one); check your input level: under 'input volume level' in your rig. If it's a real cheap camera, there should be some kind of GD volume control. If not, geeesh; put marshmallow over the stereo microphones. If it's MONO, wrap a piece of duct tape around the front, being careful not to cover the lens; if it's too late, cut a hole with a blow torch through the tape until the camera melts in your lap.

  • what album is this tune in?

  • @xpaddy01 check out some of Oz's Cds he has used Lenny breau-style harmonics before!!! ("Sometimes it snows in April" and on the live disc!!)

  • @thetektonics Or as frequently and fluidly as EJ does! I dunno, false harmonics is shown in classical guitar, but Lenny Breau has to be more advanced stuff! I'm still struggling with it! ;) I envy you getting to see Oz as often as you do/did! Pity he doesn't tour to the extent he'd come to Pittsburgh! Thankfully we have YouTube to fill in those gaps! ;)

  • @xpaddy01 Normally his gigs start between 10:15 and 11 p.m. (depends on what's going on beforehand) and last until 1/1:15 a.m. I was a regular in 2006 and have been back a few times every year since then. He's been doing those harmonics since at least 2006. To my knowledge he wasn't working with Eric Johnson then. However, I can say that it isn't uncommon. I have seen Vic Juris do it too. You learn it in beginner guitar classes. It's just that most guitarists don't do it as proficiently as Oz.

  • This guy is really good. He's definitely into new territory, but what's cool is that even with its novelty and complexity, his stuff is still really accessible and just plain fun to listen to.

  • This guy has saved the guitar. Whew that was close

  • @extplay Maybe so. I'm thinking in terms of "pop band" type lengths: 4-45 minute sets with 15 minute breaks. Times have changed since the 70s... I think! ;)
