I had learnt this beautiful song a few months earlier from Paul Downes who had learnt it directly from the Irish writer/lawyer Adrian Mannering

  • this is rubbish listen to the furys much much better

  • I'm sure you are right, and I'm delighted to know that the Fury's had the intelligence to record this song. I wonder how many of the words they changed? But remember that this is the first ever recording of this song and I had it on an LP long before the Fury's managed it.

  • you are right i should have been happy that you put this on YouTube i cannot find it anywhere else so instead off complaning I thank you

  • Look for Paul Downes on YT. Filmed in Philadelphia this was also done before my LP came out. Paul sings it better than I do too. It's somewhere in my library of 350+ items; and I think the first few verses are there on You tube somewhere, posted by somebody else who ran out of film space! Anyway I'm glad you answered. Pete Seeger always told me the song is more important than the singer and I think that he is right.
