  • The average tip to cue ball time is a millisecond or so but would you say that it's definitely possible to make longer contact on normal shots, especially those using extreme spin?

I was told by someone that it's impossible for the tip to stay in contact longer than a millisecond. They referenced you, even though I'm already subscribed.

I disagree because many players get good draw pushing through the cue ball and also there's a push foul for when the tips stays in contact too long.

  • @ProdigyKimXP

Go to the FAQ section of my website (the link is in the video description) and click on "cue tip" and then "contact time." I have explanations, video demonstrations, and links to many supporting resources there. The tip contact time cannot be prolonged as some people think. Check out the website.

Good draw comes from a low tip contact point and lots of cue speed at contact. For more info, see "draw - advice" in the FAQ section.

  • @DrDaveBilliards Thanks I read your FAQs section but I still have a question. Why is it possible to foul for having the tip contacting the cue ball for a time longer than that seen in normal shots? It's controversial but it does happen. If it is indeed impossible to have the tip contact the cue ball for a prolonged period of time, why make that rule?

  • @ProdigyKimXP

The main point of the rule is to prohibit a "push" shot, where the cue tip is brought into contact with the CB and the cue is accelerated gradually, keeping the tip in contact with the ball. This is not a "normal" stroke, and it is illegal. For more info and demonstrations, see the "foul" section in my FAQ page.

  • Does the quality of the table and the ball affect a draw shot? I have been playing for a few months now, but I still can't get the basics of drawing a ball, I play at a local billiard place near us but it seems that I can't seem to draw the ball, now matter what kind of technique I use, well I rarely draw the ball and so does my friend, but I usually stop the ball rather than draw it, their tables are quite old and so is their balls.

  • @whasmyname The ball and cloth conditions definitely have an effect. It is much easier to draw the cue ball on a clean, slick, and fast cloth.

For lots of technique advice and demonstrations of how to hit draw shots effectively, see the "draw" section in the FAQ area of my website (the URL is in the video description).

    Good luck,

    Dr. Dave
